Belonging.

THE SIMPLE ACT OF MAKING SACRED SPACE FOR SOMEONE

Belonging is surprisingly complex and simple. People want to be a part of something and they want to experience real connections with others — but, not at the cost of their authenticity, freedom or power. That’s simple enough.

When we morph into a “us versus them” state of disconnection and cling to the increasing culture of divisiveness — what binds us together?

That’s where things get complicated.

Here’s what belonging means to us … When we see it, we know it is rooting itself deeply, especially if it comes from community.

The things we practice …

  • We try to get close to people by listening well and valuing each person’s gifts — it’s harder to hate someone up close.

  • We speak truth to power and call out the BS by being civil, respectful and compassionate.

  • We walk alongside people and ask for their permission to help.

  • We try to break down walls that leave people out even as we’re welcomed in.

All of us are part of the same spiritual story. We belong to God and each other.

When that happens, what was once so complex becomes surprisingly simple.

“Holy God, may we see Christ in All reaffirming everyone belongs to you.”
