There’s usually more than one way to solve any problem. With this in mind, we’ve got two main goal to solve problems: understand, first — then solve the problem.
The next time a person comes to you describing a difficult problem or situation, try to listen to understand. Ask questions about how they feel and what they experienced. Put yourself in their shoes so you can understand where they’re coming from.
Wait until after you’ve really listened to what they have to say and (only then!) ask if you can share your thoughts. Remember, the goal is to help people feel heard and understood.
